A Free State ward councillor is in custody after he was arrested by police for allegedly assaulting a foreign national.
The ward councillor of Kestell near Harrismith in Maluti-A-Phofung was arrested alongside his co-accomplice on Sunday, 1 January 2023, following the incident.
According to police spokesperson Mmako Mophiring, it is alleged that on New Year's Day at about 08:45, the two suspects, aged 46 and 39, insulted and assaulted the business owner and damaged his property.
He says following the said incident, the victim went to the police for assistance and the two followed and continued to assault him at the police station.
The ward councillor and his accomplice were both arrested on the spot by police on duty and were detained. They are set to face charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property.
Mophiring adds that the duo will appear before the Kestell Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 3 January 2023.
