34 suspects arrested for residing illegally at Bloemfontein Southern Landfill site─── ZENANDE MPAME 09:09 Sun, 09 Mar 2025

Thirty four suspects will appear in the Bloemfontein and Batho Magistrate’s Courts on Monday (10/3) after they were arrested for residing at the Southern Landfill site in Bloemfontein.
A joint operation by the police aimed at addressing criminal activities in the area resulted in the confiscation of drugs, a brand-new television, a weigh scale, alcohol, and ammunition.
The operation that was planned by the Kagisanong police working with Park Road police station, Mangaung Metro Law Enforcement, and the Department of Home Affairs led to the arrest of the suspects on Friday (7/3).
“Investigations indicate that 31 of the arrested suspects are illegal immigrants residing at the landfill site,” said Free State police spokesperson Lorraine Earle. “Further investigations are underway to determine whether any suspects are linked to other criminal activities.”
“The involvement of local community policing forum patrollers and private security companies underscores the importance of community participation in the fight against crime.”
OFM News previously reported in December reports of criminal activity, territorial disputes, and security lapses raised alarm among local workers and residents.
Local waste pickers, who rely on recycling for their livelihoods, claimed they’re being displaced and threatened by groups of undocumented immigrants, primarily from Lesotho, who allegedly dominate the site and engage in illegal activities.
The site also caught fire in December, leaving recyclers and informal residents of the Southern Landfill site near Vista Park destitute.
The site has always been an issue because it has become a criminals’ playground; two brothers (19 and 22) nearly lost their lives in 2023 when they were attacked by four unknown males. One of the assailants eventually shot at them.
“We are concerned about the crime happening at the Southern Landfill site. One of the things we are looking into is the fence that was stolen,” said Mangaung Metro spokesperson Qondile Khedama.
“The municipality is looking into addressing current waste challenges in the area.”
