Residents of Kanana, near Orkney in the North West, have expressed their concerns over possible tap water contamination as the water is alleged to be "brownish, with small worms".

OFM News learnt from a resident, Thapelo Nche, that their water has a bad taste and needs to be boiled as it looks contaminated. It is said that Orkney's central business area and Khuma township near Stilfontein are also affected by this problem.

Ntswaki Makhetha, spokesperson for the City of Matlosana Local Municipality, told OFM News that the municipality has raised these concerns with Midvaal Water for further investigation.

She said the municipality will engage with Midvaal Water as they are responsible for supplying treated water to the municipality.

Some residents claim that the water has been unclean for about three months now. A resident, Precious Tau, says it seems surprising that others only see the little worms now, citing that many people have been buying bottled water.

Makhetha said at this stage, no information has been declared by Midvaal Water to the municipality of any water quality failure. She encourages residents to boil water before using it and frequently wash their hands.
