Bloemfontein police ready for #Macufe | News Article

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Bloemfontein are ready to enforce the laws to ensure safety around the city during the Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe).

Police spokesperson, Peter Kareli, says Operation Phethisa Molao will come into full effect to ensure that all attendees of Macufe events will be and feel safe. However, the focus will still be given to other communities in the Free State to ensure that there is still safety in the province.

As it will be a busy time on the roads, the police are also requesting people to be calm, tolerant and to cooperate with all motorists who will be using the main roads - the R30, N1, N8, N3 and rural roads. Some of the crimes that Kareli want the public to be wary of, include:

•Car hijackings - ensure that you are always vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times.  Do not use your cell phone while driving.

•Theft out of motor vehicles and theft of motor vehicles - ensure that your vehicle is properly closed and locked before you move away from it, remote jamming exists.  Put away all valuables so that they do not attract unwanted eyes.

•Robberies and kidnapping - the more the merrier, do not walk alone in unlit areas late at night. Do not accept lifts from people you do not know. Arrange for transport to take you home after every event.  Do not walk around with your cell phone in your hand or earphones hanging from your ears, store the phone on you or in a bag.

•Rape - no one has the right to force you into a sexual activity or touch you in a sexual way without your consent. No one has the right to force you to perform a sexual activity you find unpleasant or in any way humiliating.  You have the right to say No!

•Be safe when using ATMs - never allow anyone who wants to help you while at the ATM. Make sure you leave with your card after every transaction. Make sure you hide the keypad when you have to punch in your PIN at the ATM. Avoid using isolated ATMs.

He adds that drinking and driving will not be tolerated at all. “Anyone found to be driving under the influence of liquor will face the full might of the law.” He also urges people to stop drug abuse. “Plan your route properly to avoid stopping and asking for direction, as this allows scanners to target your vehicle,” adds Kareli.

During the time, the police and other external stakeholders will be having roadblocks along major routes, as well as stop and searches throughout the province. “If you see anything report it to the nearest police station or Crime Line 08600 10111, Emergency Line 112 or go to MySaps App and leave an anonymous tip,” he concludes.
