The newly appointed Northern Cape Police Commissioner has been bestowed the sword of command.

The National Police Commissioner, Fanie Masemola, handed over the sword of command to the provincial commissioner, Koliswa Otola, who was appointed in August this year.

According to the Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergio Kock, the event took place on Wednesday 21 September 2022, at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre in Kimberley. Kock says Masemola was accompanied by Premier Zamani Saul, Deputy National Police Commissioner, provincial police commissioners, and other stakeholders, including the men and women in blue.

He adds that after receiving the sword, Otola solemnly swore to serve the province with loyalty, courage, and dignity.

OFM News previously reported that Saul had welcomed the appointment of Otola. This, after stating that her appointment finds expression in the provincial government's plans and commitment to empowering women, and striking a balance in gender representation in some key positions within the government.

Masemola and Police Minister Bheki Cele announced the appointment of senior management on Tuesday 2 August 2022 as part of the national interventions put in place to address heightened criminal activities in the country.

Meanwhile, Kock says Masemola commended Otola on being the 5th female provincial commissioner currently serving across the nine provinces in our country.

“General Masemola reiterated that he has confidence in Lieutenant General Otola and expects her to fight crime with the necessary vigour, zeal, and diligence. General Masemola also indicated that Lieutenant General Otola should always remember to put the people first and utilise human and physical resources optimally,” he adds.

Kock further states that the sword of command relays the formal handover of authority to Otola so that she can ensure that the Northern Cape police uphold the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and also take on the responsibility for the safety and security of all citizens in the province.
