Old infrastructure, larger population reasons for water issues at FS municipality─── 05:50 Wed, 14 Sep 2022
Old water supply infrastructure and an increase in the population are the reasons why residents in the Bethlehem-based Dihlabeng Local Municipality are experiencing an interruption in water supply.
Speaking to OFM News about the matter, municipal spokesperson Tshidiso Maitse says the old pump infrastructure at the Sol Plaatje Dam is the primary cause of water interruptions. Repair work is currently under way.
"We are increasing capacity by installing new pipes and electric cables. We are also installing generators so there won’t be interruptions in the pumping and purifying of water at times when there is no electricity."
According to Maitse, the Sol Plaatje Dam previously supplied water to a small population, but the residents of the Dihlabeng municipality have since increased.
"We are now supplying a massive area of our municipality with water, not only Dihlabeng but also Rosendal, Paul Roux and Bohlokong, among others. The municipality is working hard to ensure that the challenges that we are currently facing, become a dream of yesterday.”
