The Northern Cape Premier, Zamani Saul, has welcomed the appointment of the provincial South African Police Services (SAPS) commissioner.

Saul said the appointment of Northern Cape Police Commissioner Koliswa Otola came at a time when the government is launching the National Women's Month under the theme "Women's socio-economic rights and empowerment: Building back better for women's improved resilience".

He added that Otola's appointment finds expression in the provincial government's plans and commitment to empowering women and striking a balance in gender representation in some key positions within the government.

Saul congratulated Otola and assured her that the provincial government is cooperative and committed as she embarks on the new chapter in her professional career. This, after stating that Otola has proven herself as a capable manager who possesses the required skill and aptitude to lead the SAPS.

"She's been in the service from 1989 and she's been around, went through the ranks - a very capable individual. We are deeply impressed and thankful to the National Minister for her appointment," said Saul.

The National Commissioner, Fannie Masemola, together with Police Minister Bheki Cele announced the appointment of senior management on Tuesday as part of the national interventions put in place to address heightened criminal activities in the country.
