The legally embattled mayor of the troubled Theunissen-based Masilonyana Municipality is expected to learn her fate when she meets the ANC’s Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) to discuss her future.

The ANC IPC’s coordinator, Paseka Nompondo, told journalists at a media briefing that ANC officials will soon meet with Diamatso Modise, who is facing charges of incitement of violence in 2021.

During the address at the ANC’s headquarters in the Kaizer Sebothelo Building, in Bloemfontein, it was revealed that the IPC will engage with Modise about her pending case on public violence and an appropriate decision will be taken.

Nompondo also revealed that Premier, Sisi Ntombela, MECs, and mayors have been instructed to take appropriate action in line with labour laws to suspend officials who are charged in the courts.

Modise was arrested earlier this year for incitement of violence - which took place in Theunissen in 2021 when the community went on the rampage. OFM News at the time reported that the home of then-mayor Kunatu Stephen Koalane’s parents was set alight amidst the violent unrest. Modise is out on R2000 bail.

“The IPC has noted the political challenges confronting the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, as well as a number of arrests of municipal officials. These challenges affect the smooth running of the municipality and the effective provision of services. The ANC in its manifesto committed to building better communities. We are therefore opposed to any action that seeks to stall the commitment we made to our communities. The IPC has therefore resolved to reconstitute TROIKA of the Dihlabeng Local Municipality and Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality,” Nompondo adds.
