A Free State fine artist, who hails from Heidedal in Bloemfontein, was inspired to create a community outreach programme at the Monamodi Public School in Brandfort.

Victor Geduld, who is the fine artist, told OFM News that he came to the school when doing a fine art project. That's when he noticed that the school, including the community of Brandfort, has a problem with food security.

Furthermore, Geduld eluded that he partnered with Glen Agriculture, of the Free State Department of Agriculture, to help provide training with regard to small garden crop planting and maintenance of a garden. The tunnel employs four people and is expected to last at least seven years.

"This is a pilot project. First, I would like to thank the funding body, the National Lotteries Commission, for helping us with a little bit of funds to basically do this project. It will be the first if its kind here at one of the schools, Monamodi Public School. We built it to help the unemployed youth by creating jobs here and it is all about creating food security also, so that we provide them with nutritious fresh veggies on a daily basis," adds Geduld.

Moreover, Geduld reiterated that the net and the plastic used to to construct this tunnel will hopefully last for 7 years. He also said  they will monitor the project on a weekly basis as this will also help with training of community members, including learners, on how to create their own sustainable vegetable garden.
