A police officer was robbed of a service pistol in Thabong, Welkom.
It is alleged that the incident occurred yesterday when two police officers from Thabong Police Station attended to a complaint in the area.
According to reports, the police officers attempted to arrest a suspect who did not want to comply and resisted the arrest.
It was further reported that residents turned to attack the police instead of assisting them to arrest the suspect.
In the process of the tussle, the firearm of the Warrant Officer was robbed - a Z88 pistol with ammunition.
According to police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, the firearm is still in the hands of the robbers.
He further stated that a case of robbery of a police firearm and attack on police has been registered and a manhunt has been launched.
The District Police Commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Lerato Molale, appeals to residents not to attack their own South African Police Service (SAPS) members. He further request the community to assist in tracing the suspects who robbed the police.
