Wage strike at Sibanye-Stillwater officially over | News Article

The three-month strike at Sibanye-Stillwater’s gold mine has come to an end.

The industrial action came to an end after the two unions, the National Union of Mineworkers and AMCU, signed a wage agreement with the company on Friday.

Workers at Sibanye-Stillwater's gold operations downed tools earlier this year after the two parties failed to agree on wage increases.

The company’s spokesperson James Wellsted says they can now resume operations.

"We still need to ensure that the operations are suitable and safe, so that we can start calling back employees. We are very pleased that the strike is now over and people can now start working and earning their wages again.

"The final agreement that was reached was for a monthly increase of R1 000 extra in the first year, a R900 increase in the second year and a R750 increase in the third year in addition to all the other clauses and a hardship allowance of R3000 tied to employees when they come back before they receive their first paycheck."
