Mafube residents call for intervention─── 07:53 Mon, 23 May 2022
Frustration has been expressed regarding the financial status of the Mafube Municipality in the Free State - and the fact that it had been placed under provincial administration.
This comes after Free State Premier, Sisi Ntombela hosted a provincial imbizo in Namahadi in the Mafube municipality - which includes Frankfort - on Friday.
OFM previously reported that the Spokesperson to the Premier, Palesa Chubisi, said the purpose of the imbizo is for government to assess service delivery in the municipality, following President Cyril Ramaphosa's recent visit.

Councillor Suzette Steyn, for the DA at Mafube Municipality, expressed her frustration, saying as Mafube Municipality is the hometown of the Premier, one has to ask how it was allowed to arrive at this state of affairs.
“I am sure that she is well aware of the financial challenges that Mafube is facing and that there is no yellow fleet left to do basic services in the area,” she said.
Steyn says that they hope that competent officials will be sent to Mafube to find real solutions for these serious problems that the municipality's facing due to mismanagement.
“Residents are tired of promises that are not being kept from previous imbizo's, and they want to see real intervention,” she added.
Furthermore, the Premier has emphasised that they know and understand the problems that Mafube Municipality is facing, particularly infrastructure and shortage of water.
Steyn added that not only is the water - where residents often get water once in 10 days - and infrastructure a problem, but the road conditions are bad and unemployment leads to an increasing number of criminal activities.
There are 57 000 residents in Mafube, and 37 000 are unemployed, this is according to Steyn.
“I am sure that after the imbizo engagement held with the community and the Mafube Business Forum, the Premier is aware of the enormous task that has been laid on her shoulders,” she said.
