The Free State Premier, Sisi Ntombela, visited residents of the Umgababa hostel at Zamdela in Sasolburg, to hand out donations. This after a recent fire destroyed the hostel in Zamdela.
According to the statement issued by the provincial government, a total of 16 units were gutted by the fire, leaving residents with the clothes they were wearing at the time of the fire. Parents were also left in a predicament after their identity documents were destroyed and this made it difficult for them to access their much-needed social grants for their children. Ntombela visited the place on Sunday to assess the extent of the damages. She also handed out food parcels, blankets, stoves and paraffin to the affected families.
Ntombela expressed her sadness and promised to find suitable shelter for affected families. She said that the process of getting IDs for all that lost their documents is already underway. Ntombela further said that the Department of Human Settlements has been tasked to speedily address the matter by finding dignified accommodation for the affected Zamdela residents.
