The six suspects, aged between 28 and 47, detained by the Hawks in Bethlehem for an attempted cash-in-transit heist, are expected to appear in court soon.

The Serious Organised Crime Investigation Team in Bethlehem, or Hawks, along with Public Order Policing (POP) and the Tactical Response Team (TRT) in Phuthaditjhaba, detained the six suspects on Tuesday 3 May 2022, for an attempted cash-in-transit heist.

According to Captain Christopher Singo, it is alleged that, at about 10:45, two EFS Security Officials were delivering money at the Post Office in Paul Roux.

“One of the security officials exited the vehicle with a bag containing the undisclosed amount of money. The driver, who was inside the car, saw a number of suspects who then started to shoot at the security vehicle.”

They added that a motorist attempted to flee but collided with another vehicle that was blocking the road. The security officer, who had been outside the vehicle with the money, was able to gain entry to the vehicle again.

“The security official escaped the scene and they drove to the Paul Roux Police Station for assistance. An intelligence-driven operation was conducted by the police, where information was received and followed up, which led to the arrest of the suspects.”

The suspects are expected to appear before the Bethlehem Magistrate's Court on Friday 6 May 2022.
