Free State Transport MEC to prioritise deadly #R30 road─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 13:52 Thu, 21 Apr 2022
The Free State MEC for Transport, William Bulwane, says that the department has prioritised the notorious R31 road between Allanridge and Welkom in this financial year.
Bulwane was briefing media on issues surrounding road infrastructure and payments of road contractors in the province.
OFM News previously reported on the closure of this road following numerous accidents and deaths that occurred since the beginning of this year, despite warnings.
In a media briefing that took place at the MECs boardroom in the Perm Building in Bloemfontein, Bulwane said the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) had requested the department to reopen the R30 road to ease the traffic during the Easter holidays.
“In my budget vote, I indicated that we have to fix the R30 road. We are going to fix that road so that it's safe for users. I’ve closed it several times. During Easter, the RTMC said it must be opened so that people can use that road for Easter. I said if only you place a traffic officer on that road 24 hours a day, I don’t have a problem, which they did."
Bulwane further said that he will be engaging with the Matjhabeng Mayor, Thanduxolo Khalipha, together with mine management, to assist in fixing the road. This comes after engineers discovered that the water on the road was also caused by leaking mine pipes in the area.
