ANC loses Sedibeng District in the Vaal─── 09:30 Sun, 28 Nov 2021
The DA's Tebogo Tlhokwe has been elected as the mayor of the Sedibeng District Municipality after the ANC walked out during the voting process.
For the first time in the history of democracy, the Sedibeng district, which umbrellas the Midvaal-, Lesedi- and Emfuleni local municipalities, was taken by the DA from the ANC.
The ANC's walkout on Friday follows after the party failed to accept Freedom Front Plus's Hein van der Lith as the newly elected Chief Whip after he won by 25 votes to ANC's candidate, Emmarentia Moloi, who only received 24 votes.
In terms of section 41 of the Municipal Structures Act, read with section 30, and in view of the recent judgment on the Tshwane matters, the remaining councillors, who formed a quorum, elected a speaker.
The acting speaker called for nominations for the executive mayor. Only one DA nomination was received, duly seconded and accepted.
