The EFF in the North West says the election of one of its councillors as the speaker at the Schweizer-Reneke-based Mamusa Local Municipality comes as no surprise to them.

The EFF provincial secretary, Papiki Babuile, tells OFM News that Olebeng Mogorisi’s work ethics around the community of Mamusi is well known and those who voted for him have trust in him.

He says for now the party is not sure who voted with them because they had not engaged any party for surplus votes. Babuile says they put out Mogorosi’s name with the hope of winning the speaker’s position. Babuile says this will ensure that they hold those who are in power accountable. Mogorosi was voted as the speaker after he obtained nine votes against the seven of his ANC’s rival, Doctor Batsi.

“The first is to make sure that we hold those who are governing, accountable, and that the money of the people of Mamusa is spent wisely, in the right channels, making sure that the people of Mamusa receive services. Remember, it is the council which approves the budget for service delivery so we need to make sure that, that particular part is done properly and we play our oversight role in the council,” Babuile adds.

The ANC retained the municipality with a margin of 55%, which gave them nine seats, followed by the EFF with 25% giving them 4 seats, and the Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus), DA and Azania Independent Community Movement (AICM), all receiving a seat each in the council. Meanwhile, the council was disrupted yesterday following the election of Mogorosi as the speaker. The election of Mogorosi as the speaker has since left the ruling ANC party fuming.

The ANC’s Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) coordinator in the North West, Hlomani Chauke, says ANC members at this municipal council elected to cast secret ballots against the directive of the organisation.
