Moderate earthquake hits Northern Cape─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 09:17 Tue, 06 Jul 2021
A seismic event with a magnitude of 4,2 has hit Springbok and surrounding areas in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 6 July 2021.
According to the Council for Geoscience in South Africa, the moderate earthquake occurred 42 kms away from Springbok at 01:39 am, but the tremors could be felt by residents in the town. According to Volcano Discovery “the quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Springbok. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicentre”.
This is the third such seismic event being experienced by Northern Cape residents in the last few months.
On 27 June, the 4,1 magnitude earthquake that hit Namibia’s Karas region was felt by residents in parts of the Northern Cape too. OFM News’ spoke to retired cop, Vataleni Fanuel Kakuiyu, who said he felt the tremors inside his Keimoes home in the Northern Cape. Kakuiyu said the windows in the room he was in when the earthquake occurred began buzzing, and this frightened him immensely. He says no real damage was reported on his side but he has been informed residents residing near the Augrabies Falls felt the tremors most. The depth of the seismic event was also 10 kms.
In late May, a seismic event with a 2.2-magnitude was reported in Postmasburg, in the same province, frightening many.
It’s not yet known what is causing the frequency of the quakes in this region.
