Heavy rain continues in Central SA─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:18 Wed, 27 Jan 2021
Heavy rain continues to cause localised flooding in the North West, Free State and Northern Cape on Wednesday with a level 4 warning issued by the South African Weather Services (SAWS).
The disruptive rain in Central South Africa follows after the tropical cyclone Eloise, which has been downgraded to a tropical storm, caused damages in Limpopo and Mpumalanga following the destructive storms in the neighbouring country of Mozambique, where four people died.
The SAWS' senior weather forecaster, Puseletso Mofokeng, earlier this week indicated to OFM News that places such as Groot Marico, Pilanesburg and Bloemhof in the North West will be hit by pockets of flooding. The Free State areas in the Mangaung Metro Municipality, Ladybrand, Koffiefontein and Welkom were expected to experience localised flooding.
The latest update from the SAWS also included the Northern Cape as an area to experience flooding. The weather services had predicted the rains to continue throughout the week.
In their official warning, the SAWS said the Level 4 warning issued for disruptive rainfall includes the western parts of the North West and the extreme north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape, spreading to the western and central parts of the Free State and the eastern interior of the Eastern Cape, expected to result in flooded low-lying areas, disruption of traffic and basic services and damage to agricultural crops and livestock.
