#GBV: FS correctional centre hit by another tragedy | News Article

Another tragedy has hit the Goedemoed correctional centre in the Free State.

This time a 38-year-old prison warder, who resides in the Eastern Cape, has been arrested for allegedly killing his 38-year-old wife, who is also a warder at the prison centre. Eastern Cape Police spokesperson, Moitheri Bojabotsheha, confirms to OFM News that the two worked at the Goedemoed centre and the husband has been arrested on a charge of murder.

The 38-year-old suspect is alleged to have killed his wife following a heated argument. Bojabotsheha says the Goedemoed prison warder's bruised body was discovered by police in the couple's bedroom with two battens lying next to her.

Meanwhile, the Department of Correctional Services' (DCS) Logan Maistry tells OFM News that this is a sensitive matter and they are unsure whether the next of kin have been informed about the incident.

The 38-year-old suspect will appear before the Aliwal North Magistrate's Court on Monday.

"During the day [27 August] the police were alerted about a murder that occurred at Catchcarth Street, Aliwal North. Upon their arrival at the scene, all the doors were locked and the respondent was still inside the house, " Bojabotsheha further says.

He adds that following suspicion of the incident the owner of the house was notified and he came to assist with spare keys to open the door in order for the South African Police Service (SAPS)  to gain entrance.

"A preliminary investigation reveals that the deceased and suspect was having fun together during the day around 12:00 to 13:00 before the incident. The police found the suspect inside the house and he was arrested, " Bojabotsheha adds.

The acting Joe Gqabi District Commissioner, Brigadier Rudolph Adolph, has condemned the killing of the prison warder at the hands of her partner. Adolph says the crimes of gender-based violence (GBV) is a SAPS priority and will be investigated thoroughly and they will also ensure that bail for the suspect is refused in court.

OFM News previously reported that in March 2019, a prison warder at the above-mentioned centre, Nomsa Stuurman, was brutally murdered at the centre by a convicted murderer and rapist, Jongikhaya Samsam, who also sexually assaulted Stuurman's pregnant colleague.
