#CoronavirusNC: Two arrested for sale of cigarettes─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:19 Sun, 12 Jul 2020
While the Fair Trade Independent Tobacco Association (Fita) and government continue to lock horns in a legal battle over the ban on tobacco, questions are mounting on whether the sale of cigarettes will become reality.
Fita's appeal will be heard on July 15. In the midst of this duel, some citizens clash with the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Police in the Northern Cape arrested two businessmen in Warrenton on Saturday for violating the Disaster Management Act by selling cigarettes.
The police in that province also reported that cigarettes from various brands worth R10 000 were seized. The suspects will appear in court soon.
Last week a popular soap opera and radio drama actor, Mushi Sewetsi (44), was granted bail in the Polokwane Magistrate's court for dealing in illicit cigarettes.
Sewetsi, who featured regularly on Skeem Saam, was granted R1,000 bail and his case postponed to October 5 for further investigation.
Sewetsi and a group men were arrested after the police received a tip-off about suspects who were selling illicit cigarettes at a Polokwane taxi rank.
Sewetsi and his co-accused are alleged to have been caught red-handed with the contraband.
Meanwhile, OFM News reported that the Pretoria High Court has granted (Fita) its application to appeal the government’s ban on the sale of cigarettes during the lockdown.
Fita says government got it wrong in finding that cigarettes were not a necessity in terms of the Disaster Management Act, which bans the sale of tobacco products.
