#Coronavirus: Water provided to NC residents─── LEATILE LEIEE 08:08 Mon, 13 Apr 2020
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) have announced that they have provided more than 39 105 residents in the Northern Cape with access to water since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a statement issued by the Department a number of 161 water tankers are said to have been installed in the province which are serving 8 690 households. The Head of the Department of Water and Sanitation, Kobus Streuders, says that he is concerned with the slow delivery and installation of water tankers. The Department of Water and Sanitation have been tasked to supply basic water for hygiene purposes to fight the Covid-19 pandemic and ensure South Africa flattens the curve of infections.
“We are looking at various options of accelerating the installation of water tanks to ensure that all water tanks delivered serve our people as soon as we receive them. We are also glad to report that 18 water tanks and a water truck have been delivered to the Namakwa District Municipality which last week had none of these. 44 water tanks have so far been installed in the Sol Plaatje Municipality, 33 in Phokwane, 18 in Magareng, 17 in Ga-Segonyana, 13 in Siyacuma, 8 in Emthanjeni, 7 in Kareeberg and 4 in the Renosterberg Municipalities. The DWS once again reiterates the call for our people not to vandalise water tanks by removing the taps as this renders the tanks useless,” Streuders said.
The Department of Water and Sanitation intends to follow President Cyril Ramaphosa’s tasks following him declaring a National State of Disaster. With orders from the Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu, it will ensure that all areas are prioritised without fail for emergency interventions.
