Rustenburg municipality hits back at critics over new MM─── LUCKY NKUYANE 09:21 Wed, 13 Nov 2019
The Rustenburg Local Municipality in the North West has criticised allegations that its new Municipal Manager (MM), Victor Makona, is not suitable to steer the municipality’s ship forward.
The municipal spokesperson, David Magae, says following Makona’s appointment there have been rife speculations that he was appointed because of undue pressure from certain individuals in the municipality. He says they believe that there is a well-orchestrated disinformation campaign to dent the credibility of Makona and his suitability as incoming Municipal Manager. Makona was elected during a council meeting on 1 November after the sudden resignation of former manager, Nqobile Sithole, who resigned due to her unhappiness at work.
Magae says Makona has a credible background and is the right person to take the municipality forward.
“Makona has at least 12 years senior management experience in the local government sphere, having served as Director for Technical and Infrastructure Services and later as Chief Operating Officer at the Rustenburg Local Municipality,” he says. Magae says Makona has various qualifications such as a National Diploma in Civil Engineering, and a Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) in Transportation, Engineering and Construction Management.
It has now become clearer that the allegations against him do not hold any substance and have been malicious. For the record, there has never been any official complaint against Makona, nor any investigation against him which relates to his previous tenure at the Municipality,” he adds. “It is for that reason that the panel deemed it fit to shortlist him on account of his vast experience, qualifications and track record and make a recommendation to the council for the appointment,” Magae further adds.
Magae says Makona was subjected to an independent competency assessment and was declared competent. The selection panel then recommended his appointment.
