Free State Education condemns bullying after learner commits suicide─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 10:38 Thu, 17 Apr 2025

The Free State Department of Education has strongly condemned all forms of bullying following the tragic death of a Grade 7 learner from the Vulindlela Primary School in Harrismith.
Mbali Mlaba (13) reportedly took her own life on Tuesday (8/4) after allegedly enduring repeated bullying at school. It’s understood that Mbali’s mother found a heartbreaking note left behind by her daughter, in which she detailed the torment she had been facing.
The learner had allegedly been targeted by a classmate who accused her of cheating during a class test. It is further alleged that the bullying had persisted since the previous term and that Mbali had expressed fear of her classmate. She had even requested to be transferred to another school due to the ongoing abuse.
Free State Education MEC Julia Mabuya expressed her deep sorrow over the incident.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a Grade 7 learner from Vulindlela Primary School. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time,” Mabuya said.
She emphasised that her department is taking the issue of bullying seriously and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that all learners feel safe and supported at school.
Education spokesperson Howard Ndaba echoed this sentiment, underlining the devastating impact bullying can have on a child’s mental and emotional well-being.
“We are committed to providing support to learners and educators to prevent such incidents and promote a culture of kindness, empathy, and respect,” said Ndaba. “Psychosocial support has already been provided to learners and educators affected by this incident. The department urges parents, learners, and the community to work together in creating a safe and supportive learning environment.”
Ndaba also made a heartfelt appeal to anyone experiencing or witnessing bullying, or struggling with related issues, to seek help.
