Founder Elcardo Chulu joined Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to talk about their needs and to appeal to the Northern Cape to help them establish a permanent theatre in Upington.

Masakhane Arts Centre (MAC) is a not-for-profit youth arts organisation in the ZFM District, Northern Cape, South Africa. It promotes local talent and provides platforms for artistic expression in disciplines like drama, dance, poetry, music, film, photography, and livestreaming.

The centre has built a strong reputation for fostering arts, culture, and craft within the community.

MAC focuses on arts and cultural development by supporting traditional and contemporary art forms. Through various initiatives, it offers local artists spaces to showcase their work, enriching the region’s vibrant arts scene. In collaboration with Kazi Therate, MAC also produces professional theatre performances that entertain and educate, enhancing the cultural fabric of the region.

The centre hosts exhibitions where local artists present visual arts and crafts, complemented by traditional food and drinks, creating an immersive cultural experience.

Additionally, MAC organises the Upington 26 Historical Bike Tour, educating participants about the anti-apartheid activists known as the Upington 26, blending physical activity with historical insights.
