The William Humphreys Art Gallery presents SANKOFA: 360 Degree Exhibition─── 08:43 Tue, 03 Dec 2024
Chief Curator at the William Humphreys Art Gallery, Chepape Makgato, joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM ArtBeat to tell us more about the artwork.
The William Humphreys Art Gallery (WHAG) proudly presents SANKOFA: 360 Degree Exhibition, a retrospective celebrating the six-decade artistic journey of Rochester ‘Rocky’ Mafafo, a pivotal figure in South African art.
Born in Galeshewe in 1956, Mafafo trained at the Rorke’s Drift Centre, earning his certificate in 1977. This first-of-its-kind exhibition features works from 1965 to 2024, showcasing his exploration of identity, memory, and South Africa’s socio-political evolution.
Inspired by the Ghanaian concept of SANKOFA, emphasising learning from the past, the exhibition highlights Mafafo’s sculptures, paintings, and drawings. It traces his politically charged beginnings in the 1960s, his experimental phases, and his recent reflective works. Including archival materials and personal sketches, SANKOFA offers an intimate view of his artistic impact.
“This exhibition honours Rocky Mafafo’s legacy of teaching, mentoring, and fostering art appreciation. His work, addressing themes of identity, justice, and resilience, continues to inspire generations,” chief curator Chepape Makgato notes.
WHAG will offer a dynamic array of public programmes, including workshops, guided walkabouts, and artist discussions throughout the duration, all to provide enriched perspectives on Mafafo’s artistry and career, and to deepen audience engagement.
The SANKOFA: 360 Degree Exhibition opened with a reception on 28 November 2024 and will run until 28 February 2025 at the William Humphreys Art Gallery. For more information and RSVP, please contact Zaakira on 053 8311724/5 or email: zaakirah@whag.co.za
