Photographer and photojournalist who practiced predominantly through the early 1970’s - 2000’s, Len Khumalo also fondly known as Bra Len will be honored this March at the NWU Gallery with the exhibition titled “The Damage Still Remains”.

Mid-Morning Magic’s Yolanda Maartens chats to curator Nthabeleng Masudubele about why they decided to pay tribute to Len and what the public can expect from this exhibition.

“Bra Len” was known to be able to redefine photography spaces as a black man in society and establish his role as an important forerunner in the industry.  He has provided us with a rich archive, depicting and preserving scenes from South African history.

The archival photographs reclaim their central place in our understanding of a period that laid the foundations for the early global photographs depicted by black photographers. Our story is truly told through the history of photography. This exhibition is a revolutionary opportunity to reconsider our understanding of South African history.

The exhibition opens at the NWU Botanical Gardens Gallery on 10 February 2023 and has a series of associated public events, ranging from an artist Q&A panel discussion as well as a walkabout.
