UFS students defiant despite court interdict, Bfn campus closed again | News Article

Bloemfontein - University of the Free State (UFS) students are continuing their protest against fee increases and have forced the closure of the institution's Bloemfontein campus for a second day.

This despite the institution obtaining an urgent court interdict against them.

OFM News' Owen Kock is at the university's main entrance on Nelson Mandela Avenue where the students are gathered.

He spoke to Student Representative Council (SRC) president, Lindokuhle Ntuli.

In a media statement UFS Vice Chancellor and Rector, Jonathan Jansen, said the interdict was not to prevent students from exercising their right to protest or use any form of demonstration that does not threaten people or property. He said management has a double responsibility of guaranteeing all students’ rights and safeguarding university staff, property and academic activities.

Students started protesting on Tuesday, demanding a zero percent tuition increase. The SRC and university management met until late on Tuesday night over the proposed increases but could not reach an agreement. University students across the country are protesting.
