Judgment expected in John Block corruption trial | News Article

Kimberley - Judgment is expected to be handed down against ANC provincial chairperson and Finance MEC in the Northern Cape, John Block in the Trifecta trial by the Northern Cape High Court today.

Block, COGTA MEC Alvin Botes and businessman Christo Scholtz, are facing charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering relating to government building leases involving millions of rand.

The National Prosecuting Authority alleges the Trifecta Group entered into a number of lease agreements with the Northern Cape social development department in which rentals, or rental space, were grossly inflated.

The accused have pleaded not guilty to all the charges against them or their companies.

The trial began over a year and a half ago and has been beset by numerous delays.

A bid was made last year that Judge Mathebe Phatshoane to recuse herself which was dismissed.

Acquittal applications were also dismissed last year by Phatshoane, who said she was satisfied that there was enough evidence on which a court, acting carefully, might reasonably convict the accused.
