Zim woman in NW cold case refusing food, medication | News Article

The 42-year-old Zimbabwean woman, who confessed to killing and dismembering her husband’s body in the North West town of Ledig back in 2015, is set to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

This is to determine her mental fitness to stand trial. Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Henry Mamothame, says the accused, Nancy Majonhi, is currently hospitalised and was declared unfit to attend proceedings in the Mogwase Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, due to her ill-health.

The medical report presented in court reveals Majonhi is refusing food and medication, hence the request for an assessment into the state of her mental health currently.  She will remain under observation at the unnamed health facility, till her next court date which is 9 November. This is for bail application proceedings which the state will oppose.

In July 2015, Majonhi allegedly assaulted her husband Prosper Chipungare with a hammer in their Ledig home on the back of a heated argument. Mamothame previously told OFM News that “she then hacked him with a spade and threw the body parts into three different pit latrines before cleaning the place where the incident happened. Subsequent to the alleged killing, she went to Sun City police station where she reported her husband missing”. The accused managed to get away with the murder and fled South Africa, returning to her native Zimbabwe.

It is here, years later that she confessed to her family and in-laws that she had committed the murder and it was arranged that she make her way back to the country and hand herself in for the crime. Police have since managed to retrieve Chipungare’s remains with the assistance of Majonhi, and subject the remains to forensic testing. The outcome thereof is yet to be revealed.
