Police administration clerk released on bail─── 10:47 Sat, 24 Apr 2021
The case against Michael Mazazo (42) has been postponed after he was released on R1000 bail.
Mazazo, an administration clerk at the Stilfontein Police Station in North West, will re-appear in the Local Magistrate’s Court on May 19.
He is facing 33 counts of fraud.
According to provincial spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, a departmental investigation has been instituted against Mazazo in terms of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Discipline Regulations.
Mazazo was released on bail following his appearance at the same court on April 21, Mokgwabone says.
Mazazo was arrested at his workplace by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit (ACIU) on April 21.
The crimes were allegedly committed between August and November 2020, wherein he reportedly used fuel cards of 12 different state-owned vehicles to refill petrol at a local filling station.
Mokgwabone further discloses that the said vehicles were actually parked at the police station.
Provincial Police Commissioner Sello Kwena, in a statement, commended the ACIU for sending a clear message, namely that corruption and fraud cannot be tolerated.
“SAPS employees who commit criminal and disgraceful acts such as this one, will not be spared,” he said.
