Two Centlec employees is still in the hospital after being injured in an explosion at the Brandwag substation in Bloemfontein.

The incident happened on Wednesday (11/12) while the team was investigating low voltage complaints in the Brandwag area. Centlec spokesperson Lele Mamatu said Heinrich Spangenberg and Itumeleng Mphenetha were sent to repair the problem when an unexpected explosion occurred. Both were rushed to hospital while other workers at the scene were treated for shock.

Mamatu said the cause of the explosion is still being investigated.

“As Centlec, we are committed to ensuring the safety of all our staff on site. Our team of electricians and technicians was sent to clear the scene and restore power to the community of Brandwag.”

A wellness assistance programme has been arranged to counsel staff members affected by the incident.

“We would like to wish our colleagues in the hospital a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time,” Mamatu said.
