Alcaraz to face Djokovic in Wimbledon final again─── MORGAN PIEK 08:19 Sat, 13 Jul 2024
“But I’m coming into the final feeling great, with a really high level of tennis, moving well, with a really high level of confidence for really good results on Sunday. It's great to be back in a Wimbledon final and I’m going to enjoy it for sure.”
The defending champion, Carlos Alcaraz, will face the seven-time champion, Novak Djokovic, on Sunday in the final of the men’s singles at Wimbledon.
The match on Centre Court will be a repeat of the 2023 final when the young Spanish sensation beat the seasoned master in a five-set thriller to win the grass-court Grand Slam for the first time.
On Friday in the first semi-final Alcaraz fought back from a set down to beat the fifth seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russia in four-sets to reach his second final.
The 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-4 also means that Alcaraz is in a position to defend his crown for the first time.
Following his win against the former world number one, Alcaraz, said he felt that he played better matches at Wimbledon, but is feeling good and confident going into the final.
“Honestly, I feel I've played better matches this year here – against Tommy Paul, for example,” said Alcaraz.
“Daniil and Tommy have differing styles of play and you have to adapt your game to both matches.
“But I’m coming into the final feeling great, with a really high level of tennis, moving well, with a really high level of confidence for really good results on Sunday. It's great to be back in a Wimbledon final and I’m going to enjoy it for sure.”
In the second semi-final, it was a fairly one-sided affair with the 37-year-old Serbian great beating the young Lorenzo Musetti in straight-sets to reach the final for a 10th time.
Djokovic took the semi-final 6-4, 7-6 and 6-4 to remain in the hunt for a record 25th Grand Slam title. Even crazier is that Djokovic is into his 37th Grand Slam final.
Djokovic said despite his recent knee surgery he is very good for a crack at history.
“I’m obviously very, very pleased and satisfied to get to another final but I don’t want to stop there,” said Djokovic.
“I don't want to prove people wrong - I was really focused on, you know, trying to make Wimbledon happen for me this year.
“The first couple of rounds maybe I wasn't moving as well, and I was still finding that freedom to move, so to say.
“Then third, fourth round particularly onwards I felt like, okay, I’m not thinking about the knee. I’m actually playing free, and I’m playing as well as I can.”
The final at the All England Lawn Tennis Club will be played on Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, on Saturday at 15:00 it’s the ladies singles final between Jasmine Paolini of Italy and Barbora Krejcíková of the Czech Republic. A first-time champion will be crowned at SW19 on Saturday.
