Gallants advance to Nedbank Cup semi-finals─── MORGAN PIEK 08:55 Mon, 10 Mar 2025

The Bloemfontein-based Marumo Gallants have booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Nedbank Cup.
This marks back-to-back semi-final appearances in cup competitions this season for Gallants, who edged past Durban City FC on penalties in Chatsworth on Sunday.
Earlier in the season, Gallants defeated Stellenbosch FC 1-0 in the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals but fell short in the semi-finals, losing 2-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Sunday’s quarter-final at Chatsworth Stadium ended in a goalless stalemate after extra time, forcing a penalty shootout. Both teams created several chances, and Durban City will feel aggrieved not to have been awarded a late penalty that could have sealed the match for them.
In the shootout, Gallants were clinical, while Durban City faltered. The hosts missed their second spot-kick, hitting the crossbar, while their following attempt lacked power and was comfortably saved by the visiting goalkeeper.
Gallants triumphed 4-1 in the shootout, setting up a high-stakes semi-final clash against defending champions Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.
The back-to-back champions, Pirates, also advanced via a penalty shootout, edging SuperSport United 5-4 after their quarter-final in Polokwane ended 2-2 following extra time.
The semi-final between the Buccaneers and Gallants will no doubt be a very spicy affair following the team from Bloemfontein’s recent 2-0 against the Soweto giants at the Toyota Stadium in the league.
Acknowledged the challenge
Gallants captain and man of the match, Edgar Manaka, acknowledged the challenge posed by Durban City but emphasised their confidence in cup football.
“It was a very difficult game against a strong opponent,” said Manaka. “Durban City is a fantastic team – we knew it was going to be tough because they wanted it just as much as we did. At times, we played into their hands, but as Marumo, we understand cup football.

“In this competition, patience is key. It’s also helping us build momentum in the league.”
Meanwhile, in another quarter-final clash at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha, Kaizer Chiefs secured a 3-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC. The Glamour Boys will now face the winner of the postponed tie between Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United.
Called off at last minute
The match between Sundowns and Sekhukhune was called off at the last minute due to a double booking of the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday. The PSL has yet to confirm a new date for the rescheduled quarter-final.
The league is also yet to announce the dates and kick-off times for the semi-finals.
