Marumo Gallants returned to winning ways in the Premier Soccer League with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Cape Town City at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday (11/1).

This victory ended Gallants’ four-match winless streak in the PSL, while City failed to build on their recent wins over Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Gallants began on the front foot, applying early pressure and Masindi Nemtajela registered the first attempt in the fourth minute, only to see his shot blocked. Their efforts paid off in the 11th minute when the former Bloemfontein Celtic striker and crowd favourite, Gabadinho Mhango, earned a penalty after drawing a foul in the box. The captain Edgar Manaka converted with a precise right-footed shot to put Gallants ahead.

The hosts dominated the first half, coming close to doubling their lead in the 26th minute when Nemtajela’s long-range strike rattled the crossbar. Despite creating further chances through Daniel Msendami and Kamohelo Mahlatsi, Gallants entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.

City showed a lot more intent after the break, with substitute Hashim Domingo injecting energy into their attack. Although they enjoyed more possession, City struggled to penetrate Gallants' disciplined defence. Prins Tjiueza and Domingo created sporadic threats, but the visitors failed to convert their opportunities.

Gallants adopted a defensive approach in the latter stages, relying on counterattacks and game management to preserve their lead. Mhango attempted a speculative effort from distance with ten minutes remaining, but City’s backline held firm.

Despite late pressure from the visitors, Gallants remained resolute and secured a vital victory. The result highlighted their resilience and ability to capitalise on key moments, as they earned their fourth win of the campaign, and opened a five-point gap on the 14th-placed Richards Bay. On Saturday Gallants will travel to Gqeberha where they will face Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

In Saturday's other game, AmaZulu, shot up to 8th on the log by beating the Carling Knockout Cup champions, Magesi FC, 1-0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

In Sunday’s games, Kaizer Chiefs will host Golden Arrows at the Moses Mabidha Stadium, with this game in Durban kicking off at 15:30. At 17:45, SuperSport United will face Sekhukhune United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.
