Orlando Pirates are back on the winning track─── KAYLA BARKER 16:39 Sat, 18 Feb 2023
Orlando Pirates beat Maritzburg United 2-1 at the Orlando Stadium on Friday evening getting them back on the winning track. Winning secured the Buccaneers a bump to third place in the league standings.
In their previous PSL game on 4 February, Orlando Pirates lost 1-0 to the current log leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns. After dominating Friday evening’s game they have climbed back on the winning track.
The Soweto Giants had control of the game from the start but did not manage to get past Maritzburg United until just before the first half was seen through. Monnapule Saleng opened the floor for their victory by scoring on the stroke of half-time.
Entering the second half with a 1-0 lead, the Buccaneers fought against Maritzburg’s defence and got close to a send goal in the 70th minute. Unfortunately, Ndlondlo’s strike was not secured. Shortly after, Saleng again pursued further success for the team by setting up Terrence Dzvukamanja for Pirates’ second and winning goal of the night with a free kick. Dzvukamanja’s header was netted and so, together, Saleng and Dzvukamanja carried the team to their 2 goal victory.
The Team of Choice came back fighting with a goal in the 85th minuteby Tumelo Njoti, but it was not enough as the game neared its end.
Orlando Pirates are set to face Kaizer Chiefs in their next PSL clash on the 25th of February. Currently Royal AM are at home to SuperSport United, while at 17:30 Sekhukhune United will face Richards Bay and at 20:00 tonight AmaZulu will entertain TS Galaxy.
