Plans to reduce electricity demand─── 07:21 Sat, 03 Jun 2023

Electricity Minister Kgosientso Ramokgopa said his department has devised a plan to reduce electricity demand by at least 1 000 MW.
He provided an update on efforts to solve the energy crisis in Cape Town on Friday.
Ramokgopa said plans include charging batteries and inverters at night and not immediately when load-shedding ends.
"It is about setting inverters and batteries to charge from the grid during the night. Part of the problem we have is a surge in demand when the lights come back on after load-shedding.
"So what people do is that they consume what they consume and simultaneously they charge the back-up solution. We are asking them not to charge it at that time, but at night."
Ramokgopa added that the department is currently working with the cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg.
He believes the initiative could save the municipalities at least 370 MW each.
