#Transnet guards empowered to make arrests─── 06:21 Wed, 17 Aug 2022
The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services has granted Transnet's security officers the power to make arrests.
Government says this also means that the state-owned entity's security officers will be able to assist the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) with prosecutions.
The powers granted by the justice ministry allow them to search premises, facilities and people as well as complete dockets to ensure suspects are charged.
The officials will conduct and assist in basic investigations.
Transnet has experienced a significant increase in cable theft over the last five years. The company has lost R4.1 billion as a result.
Security officers will take up the new role after the relevant training.
