Nxesi to brief parliament on #unemployment funds─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 07:33 Tue, 20 Oct 2020
Issues pertaining to the high unemployment rate in the country will once again come under scrutiny on Tuesday.
This, as Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi is expected to address the National Assembly on the disbursement of the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).
During his briefing before the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) last week, Nxesi drew attention to how a system overhaul was needed at the Unemployment Insurance Fund and the Compensation Fund following damning reports by the Auditor-General.
Nxesi is this afternoon expected to brief the National Assembly on how systems of the UIF and the Compensation Fund would be reviewed.
This, in addition to how the government will be assisting the 2,2 million people who have lost their jobs in the second quarter of the year as per the latest Stats SA report.
The report by Statistics South Africa showed that employment losses were observed across all industries, with the highest official and expanded unemployment rates recorded in the Eastern Cape, followed by Gauteng at 26.4% then the Free State at 25.3 %.
