The Leopards have made a big signing as they turn their attention to the Griffons for their SA Cup derby in Potchefstroom.

The team has secured the services of the exciting former University of the Free State Shimlas scrumhalf, Chadd Adams. The explosive and dynamic Adams plays a style very similar to that of current Toyota Cheetahs halfback, Jandré Nel. During the 2023 Varsity Cup – where the Shimlas reached the semi-finals – Adams was the first-choice scrumhalf, with Nel as his understudy.

Sylvester Hassien is currently the starting scrumhalf for the Leopards, having worn the number nine jersey against both Griquas and the Cheetahs. However, Adams will undoubtedly add depth to the position.

Since finishing at Shimlas, Adams has been somewhat in the rugby wilderness and he sees this as a big and possibly his last opportunity to play professional rugby.

Speaking to OFM Sport, Adams expressed gratitude for the opportunity and his excitement about working under Matt Proudfoot.

“I’m obviously very grateful for the opportunity. It’s a big step for me, and I’m not getting any younger,” said Adams.

“So, this is my best shot, and I see it as my last shot as well. I really want to make the most of it.

“I’ve been privileged to work with great coaches and to have Matt Proudfoot as one of them is incredible. I never would have imagined that he would be my coach one day. I’m looking forward to learning from him and giving my all to the team.

“In an environment like rugby, the team always comes before individual goals and interests. So, when I join the Leopards, I just want to do my part, be the best version of myself, and contribute to making the team stronger.

“I’m also grateful for the opportunity to represent my family and my broader support system. Above all, I’m thankful to God for this opportunity.”

Meanwhile, Saturday’s derby between the Leopards and the Griffons at Olën Park, where the teams will compete for the Jan Fourie Trophy, kicks off at 15:00.
