It was a solid day on Tuesday for the Southern Free State U18 girls’ and boys’ teams during the U18 Nationals being staged in Bloemfontein.

On Tuesday morning the Free State remained on course to reach the semi-finals after Bianca Rees-Gibbs scored a brace of goals to lead her team to an outstanding 3-1 victory against Western Province.

Rees-Gibbs took her tally up to six goals, and before Wednesday's match she was leading goal-scored in the Girls' A Section.

The Free State's biggest challenge awaits today when they face Southern Gauteng. This game at the University of the Free State will get underway at 11:20.

Meanwhile, in the boys’ section, Southern Free State and the Northern Blues played to a goalless stalemate in a game that could have gone either way.

Both teams had their chances for a win and Northerns came the closest, however, they missed a penalty stroke deep in the second half of the encounter at the University of the Free State. The results would have been bittersweet for both teams, however, a draw will always trump a defeat.

At 10:10 the Free State will face Eastern Province at the Varsity. It’s a double header for the hosts as they will also be in action against KZN Inland A from 17:15
