“What a race - it’s been a long time coming, but finally I’ve managed to do it. I’m so happy for my whole team, I finally delivered for them. A long day, tough race, but finally on top, so I’m over the moon.”
Lando Morris of McLaren has won the Miami Grand Prix in the USA for his first-ever win in Formula 1.
Last night the British driver's strategy was spot on and he used the virtual safety car to perfection to maintain an advantage over Max Verstappen and Red Bull.
Norris one the Grand Prix in 1:30:49.876 to beat the reigning World Champion, Verstappen, by over seven seconds.
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari rounded off the podium by finishing in third, while his teammate Carlos Sainz managed to finish in fourth.
Norris said there is nothing like winning a Formula 1 race.
“About time!” said a very happy Norris.
“What a race - it’s been a long time coming, but finally I’ve managed to do it. I’m so happy for my whole team, I finally delivered for them.
“A long day, tough race, but finally on top, so I’m over the moon.”
The McLaren team boss, Zak Brown, in his turn said they must now build on this momentum.
“We’ve just got to keep going, we’ve got to keep our feet on the ground, and it all goes again in a couple of weeks.
“And Oscar drove brilliantly, I feel bad he didn’t get the result he deserved, but he’ll get the full set of upgrades in Imola and let’s see what we can do.”
The next stop for the drivers is Imola for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on 19 May.
