NWU to face Maties in Varsity Netball final─── MORGAN PIEK 07:22 Tue, 11 Oct 2022
The North West University and the University of Stellenbosch will face each other next week in the final of the Varsity Netball.
On Monday night, in a thrilling first semi-final in Bloemfontein, NWU knocked off the defending champions, the University of the Free State Kovsies, with a 64-61 win.
The Eagles came from behind to beat the four-time champions at the Callie Human Hall. This game was meant to be played in Potchefstroom, but was moved to the City of Roses due to capacity.
NWU coach, Elsunet du Plessis, expressed pride in her charges and stated that the focus will shift to the final on Tuesday.
"It was an amazing game and I’m very proud of my players," said Du Plessis.
"Elmere played such a solid game in the circle tonight and that made the difference.
"We are just going to enjoy tonight, and tomorrow we’ll start refocusing again."
In the second semi-final, Maties continued their impressive form to beat UJ 43-35 at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre in Stellenbosch.
Next week Monday’s final will be played in Stellenbosch and the time for the game is yet to be confirmed.
Kovsies and the Oranje Army will battle it out in the third and fourth place play-off.
