The double Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Lara van Niekerk, has continued to impress, and this time it was during the South African Short Course Championship in Pietermaritzburg on the weekend.
The 19-year-old Van Niekerk set a new South African and African record in the 50m breaststroke for women.
Van Niekerk touched the wall in 29.62 seconds to break the record she set at the same championships last year.
The win has ensured her qualification to the World Short Course Championship in Melbourne, Australia, in December.
