The 2022 World Athletics Championship drew to a close on Monday morning in Eugene, Oregon. For South Africa it was a disappointing championship with no medals won during the ten-day event.

There were opportunities for South Africans to win medals at the championship with several athletes such as Wayde van Niekerk, Luxolo Adams, and Akani Simbine reaching the finals of their respective events, however, none were able to make their way onto the podium.

The hosts, the USA, topped the medals table with a total of 33 medals, of which 13 were gold, 9 were silver and 11 were bronze.

Ethiopia were the best performers from Africa with 10 medals, which included four gold, four silver and two bronze. This saw them finish in second overall.

Kenya in turn, also earned 10 medals with 2 being gold, five being silver and three being bronze. This led to Kenya finishing in fourth overall.

Next on the calendar will be the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, which gets underway on Thursday with the opening ceremony.

It will be the first time in history that the African Championships, Athletics World Championships, and Commonwealth Games are all staged in the same year.

The first disciplines in the athletics at the Commonwealth Games will get underway on 2 August.
