SA urged to use water sparingly amid heatwave─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 09:28 Thu, 27 Dec 2018
The Department of Water and Sanitation is calling on South Africans to use water sparingly this festive season.
This as large parts of the country, including Gauteng, the North West, Free State and the Northern Cape, have been hit by a heatwave in the past days. The department says the high temperatures have resulted in some dam levels dropping. The current national average has declined to below the 75 % level. The department’s spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau, however, says this is not a crisis and not a cause for concern at the moment as there is still sufficient water to carry the country through to the new year when rain will be expected.
Ratau confirms that the country has experienced a heatwave similar to the on-going one, in the past years, and they have managed to ensure consistent water supply. He, nonetheless, urges all citizens to be considerate when using water.
