Harmony Gold headline earnings up 49% despite high fatality numbers─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 06:40 Wed, 14 Feb 2018
Bloemfontein - Harmony Gold’s South African operations are in a good and steady state despite recording high fatality numbers.
Harmony Gold Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Peter Steenkamp, told OFM News that the mining company’s headline earnings are up by 49%, with the company seeing a 6% increase in gold production in the 6-month period ending December 31st, 2017.
The mining company is in the process of acquiring the Moab Khotsong mine from Anglo Gold Ashanti.
Steenkamp says the Moab Khotsong transaction is one of many projects Harmony is working on, the company is also expanding the Tshepong Mine near Welkom, while deepening the Joel mine located near Theunissen in the Free State province.
Steenkamp says Harmony is concerned about the eight fatalities that occurred in that period.
He said their fatality numbers were hit hard by the rock fall at Kusalethu Mine in Gauteng last year August where five mineworkers lost their lives in the single incident.
Steenkamp says Harmony Gold is working on preventative actions, specifically risk assessment.
