Cape Town – Gauteng Premier David Makhura intends declaring some parts of his province disaster areas following the fierce flash floods that left destruction in its wake.

The floods hit Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni on Wednesday, killing at least six people and causing extensive damage to homes, vehicles and other infrastructure.

Makhura returned from an investment conference in Namibia and received a report on the scale of the damage and casualties from acting premier Paul Mashatile.

He also received a report on how operations at OR Tambo International Airport were affected.

“A significant number of our citizens from across Gauteng are continuing to be displaced as the heavy rains continue into the weekend,” he said.

“Provincial and local government disaster management teams have been doing a great job in assisting to provide temporary relief to those affected.”

He said declaring disaster areas would allow them to get the necessary resources to assist those affected.

The provincial government and the relevant municipalities would continue working together in this regard.

They would also attend to necessary repairs and upgrades to prevent future similar disasters, said Makhura.

He warned residents to be extra cautious this weekend as more floods were anticipated.

People living in low-lying areas should take special care. Those living next to rivers and streams should move to a safer place or higher spot when the water level rise.

Makhura extended his condolences to the loved ones of those who had died.
