Crime in SA mostly down across all categories─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 11:10 Fri, 02 Sep 2016
Cape Town - Crime in South Africa has mostly decreased with only contact crime, including murder, sexual offences, attempted murder, common assault and common robbery showing an increase of 1% in the past year.
These crimes have, however, shown a decrease of 14% over the past 10 years.
This was among the national crime statistics revealed by police Minister, Nkosinathi Nhleko, and Acting National Commissioner, Khomotso Phahlane, in Parliament this morning.
A total of 2.1 million contact crimes were reported nationally. In the Free State there was a 2.9% decrease in contact crimes compared to the previous financial year.
These crimes increased with 0.5% in the Northern Cape and 0.4% in North West. The national murder rate has increased and stands at 34 per 1 000, with the Northern Cape being the only province that has shown a decrease with a drop of 9.9%.
Attempted murder has increased in six provinces, with a decrease in North West, Free State and the Western Cape. According to Phahlane a downward trend in crime statistics shows police are making a serious dent in reducing crime.
