Motheo FM presenters up in arms─── 12:16 Mon, 07 Jan 2019
Presenters of the Motheo FM community radio station, in Bloemfontein, are up in arms after the station failed to pay their salaries and they are also demanding the station manager, Manko Buffel, to step down immediately.
The 30 presenters and news readers downed microphones this morning and are currently protesting outside the station, near Pacofs, in the central business district. The station has been shut down since early this morning and is only playing music. They are accusing the management of malpractices, underpaying them and favouritism, amongst others. Their spokesperson, Vuyikazi Dunywa, tells OFM News that the rift started when management failed to listen to their grievances that include the installation of landline phones and the lack of proper toilets. "We struggle with basics like toilet paper and access to phones and Wifi. We have engaged the management on several occasions with no luck. We want the station manager to vacate her position immediately, because she failed both the listeners and presenters. We want her gone now" she said. She also says Buffel favours certain employees over others.
Buffel, on the other hand, says it is not true that she takes sides. "The presenters know that this is a community radio station that uses volunteers and they know our challenges. Yes, the presenters are on strike. We are having a meeting now with management and the board members. We should, before the end of the day, be back on air," she says.
